Shopify will calculate tax on return shipping fees for eligible US orders

Starting October 23, 2026, Shopify Tax and Tax Platform will calculate tax on return shipping fees for orders shipped to the United States. The change does not apply broadly across North America.

Shopify says merchants will see an estimated tax when creating a return, while the final amount will be recorded when the return is processed.

The resulting taxes will flow into Shopify tax reports automatically, and existing state-level settings will still determine whether return shipping is taxed.
