GA4 offers several ways to read data. Choose among them by the question: confirm a trend, investigate an anomaly, or reconcile orders and profit. This lesson helps Shopify store leads, media buyers, and analysts choose a starting point and keep a reviewable record of the decision.

Key point Write the question before choosing the report
Use Reports for routine monitoring, Explore for a focused investigation, and business records to establish order, refund, and profit facts.
Questions this lesson answers
Choose a starting point from the store's question
GA4 measures website and app behavior. It records actions such as viewing a product, adding it to a cart, and purchasing as events. Shopify holds checkout and order states; a payment service holds authorization and capture records. An event, a person, and an order are different units even when their totals happen to agree.
Reports is the standard GA4 reporting area for repeated checks of channels, pages, devices, and purchase trends. Explore lets an analyst choose the grouping, filters, and technique for a particular question. A dimension says how to group data, such as device. A metric says what to count or calculate, such as users. Establish the unit and date range before comparing groups.
The classroom store sells leakproof tumblers through Shopify and receives visits from Meta ads. Its lead wants to understand why fewer mobile visitors reach checkout. Start with the trend, then inspect the device and funnel steps. An ordered funnel counts users reaching its defined steps; those users are not automatically Shopify checkout records.
Choose the question closest to your work. The selector describes a route; it does not connect an account, export real data, or approve spending.
Which question are you answering?
Start in Reports with the same dates, channel, and metric. A small one-day move supports observation before a major decision.
Use Explore once the trend merits investigation. A funnel can locate a weaker mobile step; page or payment evidence must still explain it.
Check Shopify, payment, and finance records for payment, refund, cancellation, or profit questions. Arrange BigQuery only when raw-event joins are needed and permissions and cost ownership are established.
The default is routine monitoring. Without clicking, you can follow the sequence: define the question, confirm the trend, investigate the anomaly, then reconcile business facts. Save a stable report definition when the question recurs. Check processing, dates, and data-quality notices before interpreting the result. A more complex interface cannot supply missing identity, consent, or order definitions.

FAQ
- If Reports and Explorations numbers differ, which one should I trust?
Do not start by asking which one is wrong. Reports are for routine inspection, while Explorations support focused investigation. Date range, filters, segments, comparisons, data retention, thresholding, sampling, and high-cardinality can all make them differ. Use the three-question report chooser to name the question type before moving up the GA4 sequence of checks.
- Which questions start in Traffic acquisition or Ecommerce purchases, and which ones need Explore?
Routine inspection, trend confirmation, and channel health start in Traffic acquisition, Landing page, or Ecommerce purchases. Once the anomaly is confirmed and you need landing page x device, funnel steps, path, or audience overlap, move to Free Form, Funnel, Path, or Segment Overlap. Keep routine inspection, cause investigation, and serious reconciliation separate.
