What happened
Shopify says each product variant can now hold up to 20 barcodes, including UPC, EAN, ISBN, GTIN, ASIN, and Custom codes.
Merchants can add, scan, remove, bulk-edit, import, and export variant barcodes; Shopify also supports barcode lookup across any barcode assigned to a variant.
Shopify says existing barcodes require no migration, but channels continue to read the first barcode provided wherever only one barcode is expected.
The update includes format checks for supported standard barcode types when values are entered.
Business relevance
Why it matters
For global merchants managing manufacturer, private-label, marketplace, and internal identifiers, the change can keep those references attached to one variant instead of maintaining a separate spreadsheet.
The first-barcode rule means adding more identifiers improves Shopify-side records without automatically changing the barcode sent to sales channels, labels, or apps.
