Business relevance
Why it matters
The update gives store staff a way to use known online intent during an in-person interaction, such as helping with sizing or answering product questions.
For merchants with both online and physical sales, the feature could reduce the handoff between digital browsing and store assistance if customers are consistently identified across channels.
Because visibility depends on permissions, customer identification, email capture, checkout eligibility, and location context, the feature is unlikely to work for every shopper or every abandoned cart.
Editorial perspective
Analysis & judgment
This is best understood as a service workflow rather than a guaranteed recovery tool: staff can offer relevant help, but the evidence does not establish that the feature increases completed purchases.
The permission requirement creates a useful control point. Merchants can limit access to roles that need customer context, while deciding whether the expected service benefit justifies broader operational exposure.
The customer-identification and email requirements make identity capture important. If a retailer’s in-store lookup process is inconsistent, the new view may produce limited operational value even after the setting is enabled.
Applicability
Seller impact
Store teams may need a clear, customer-friendly way to introduce assistance based on an online cart without implying that staff can see broader browsing activity.
Managers should review which POS roles receive the View abandoned checkouts permission, particularly if different teams have different customer-service responsibilities.
Retailers should expect uneven coverage because only eligible carts tied to identified customers with email and location context can appear.
Action plan
What to do now
- 1
Check POS version and permissions
nowConfirm that relevant locations use Shopify POS v11.14 or later and review whether “View abandoned checkouts” is enabled only for the intended POS roles.
- 2
Define an in-store assistance script
this-weekGive staff a short, non-intrusive workflow for looking up an identified customer, offering product help, and explaining that the visible information is limited to eligible online cart items.
- 3
Measure workflow usefulness before expanding access
monitorTrack how often staff can find an eligible cart and whether the interaction leads to useful service or completed purchases; expand permissions only if the observed benefit supports it.
What not to do yet
- Do not assume every abandoned checkout will be visible: identification, an email address, checkout eligibility, location context, and the required permission all matter.
- Do not tell staff that the feature reveals browsing history; the supplied evidence says it exposes products in the online cart only.
