Shopify ends Discounts Allocator Function API preview and blocks affected app deployments

Shopify has closed the global developer preview, removed the API, and will not release it. Most developers are unaffected; apps still declaring the purchase.discounts-allocator.run extension target must remove it.

Reported details

What happened

Discounts Allocator Function API has been removed and will not be released as a long-term Function API; the developer preview is closed.

The related register and unregister mutations were removed from Shopify’s unstable Admin GraphQL API, and Functions registered during the preview are unregistered automatically.

Apps that still declare the purchase.discounts-allocator.run extension target are the exception to the no-action guidance: shopify app deploy fails for the entire app until that extension is removed.

Business relevance

Why it matters

The change affects the app-development workflow globally, not ordinary discount setup for merchants who never used the preview.

Discount allocation remains controlled by Shopify’s platform logic, while Shopify points developers who still need function-based discount creation to the Discount Function API.

Editorial perspective

Analysis & judgment

  1. This is a preview retirement rather than a migration from one stable API to another: the allocator API was never available in a stable Admin GraphQL version, so affected teams should remove obsolete configuration instead of planning a production cutover.

  2. The practical risk is deployment blockage, not a broad change to every store’s discount behavior. Teams should first identify whether their app configuration contains the retired extension target before changing discount logic.

  3. Shopify’s rationale is that native discount controls now cover more use cases, including stacking multiple product discounts on the same line. That supports a narrower remediation path, but teams with specialized allocation requirements should validate their current behavior against the available discount mechanisms.

Applicability

Seller impact

Merchants using an app that participated in the preview may see no immediate storefront change, but the app team could be unable to deploy updates while the retired extension target remains declared.

Merchants whose apps never used the Discounts Allocator Function API or its extension target are not expected to take action based on this update.

Action plan

What to do now

  1. 1

Check app configuration for the retired extension target

    now

If your app declares purchase.discounts-allocator.run, remove that extension from the app configuration. This is the only affected configuration explicitly identified by Shopify.

  2. 2

Run a deployment check after cleanup

    this-week

After removing the target, verify that the app can deploy and review any discount-related code or configuration that depended on the preview API.

  3. 3

Assess the replacement path only if allocation logic is still needed

    monitor

If the app still needs function-based discount creation, review Shopify’s Discount Function API documentation and confirm that it supports the required workflow before undertaking a rewrite.

What not to do yet

  • Do not replace discount logic across an app that never declared the retired extension target; Shopify says those apps do not need to change anything for this update.

Evidence and sources

  1. 01

The Discounts Allocator Function API, available only through the Discounts Allocator developer preview, has been removed and won’t be released. The developer preview is closed. Most developers don’t need to take action. The one exception is an app that still declares the purchase.discounts-allocator.run extension target. What changed The Discounts Allocator Function API let an app control how discounts were allocated across cart lines. Since the preview opened, native control over how discounts apply has improved, including stacking multiple product discounts on the same line. We believe the majority of use cases are now served by these mechanisms, so it no longer makes sense to carry the Discounts Allocator API forward as a long-term Function API. Discount allocation stays with Shopify’s platform logic. This change includes: The discountsAllocatorFunctionRegister and discountsAllocatorFunctionUnregister mutations are removed from the unstable version of the Admin GraphQL API. They were never available in a stable version. Functions registered during the preview are unregistered for you. The API reference and the “Build a discounts allocator” tutorial are removed from https://shopi
